“Every child deserves a chance to shine. Because sometimes, all it takes is a different way to learn—a way that values creativity, and individuality.”
This year, we spent 31 incredible days on the road, traveling over 7,000 km from Invercargill to Whangarei, bringing creativity and play to classrooms across Aotearoa. Along the way, we worked with more than 4,000 students, building, imagining, and learning together. We were welcomed with warmth, including several beautiful waiata offered as gratitude—moments that reminded us why we do what we do.
But one story stands out.
At one school, due to large numbers, only a select group could join our activities. As I was setting up, a student approached and offered to help. They were enthusiastic, helpful, and full of questions. Together, we calculated how many bricks we had brought that day—13 x 14,000—and laughed at the sheer scale of it.
Later, I overheard complaints from other students:
“Why did that student get picked? They’re naughty. They never finish work. They always get distracted. They leave class all the time!”
During our time together, I saw none of those labels. I saw a student who stayed engaged all day, completed every activity, and even did more than expected. I saw curiosity, persistence, and joy. This student told me they often feel left out, unheard, and misunderstood. But with LEGO in their hands, they thrived. They explored, created, and showed knowledge they didn’t even realise they had.
This is why we do what we do.
Because every child deserves a chance to shine. Because sometimes, all it takes is a different way to learn—a way that values creativity, play, and individuality.
To the teachers reading this: please take five minutes to hear what we offer at House of Bricks. These moments matter. They change lives. And they remind us that behind every label is a child waiting to be understood.
